Landrum

A small South Carolina city right on the North Carolina line, founded with the railroad in 1880 and now the southern doorway to Tryon and Hunting Country.

Landrum grew up around the railroad. John Landrum gave land for a station in 1877, the town was founded in 1880 as Landrum's Station, incorporated in 1883 and became a city in 1973. The 2020 Census counted 2,481 residents. The historic depot downtown was restored and reopened in 2013 and now hosts community events and summer concerts.

Rutherford Street is the center of town, with historic brick storefronts, antiques and home shops, boutiques and restaurants. Just outside town, the Red Horse Inn sits on about 200 acres of Landrum horse country, and Campbell's Covered Bridge, described as the last covered bridge in South Carolina, is a short drive away.

Ask a local where to meet and the answer is The Hare & Hound, at 101 East Rutherford Street by the railroad tracks. It has been pouring since 2002 in a brick building that was once the town mercantile, with pub classics, a rotating beer list and Rick's Famous Baby Back Ribs, and it has added an upstairs lounge for adults. After a morning on the trails or an afternoon walking a farm, it is the easy answer to where we should go.

Landrum and Tryon share more than a state line. They belong to the same chamber of commerce, the Carolina Foothills Chamber, along with Columbus and Saluda, and the Tryon Hounds hunt on both sides of it. The Blessing of the Hounds on Thanksgiving morning opens the formal season.

For horse buyers, Landrum is the address for Caroland Farms and the Fairview Farms communities toward Campobello, and Thanksgiving Farm is about ten minutes from downtown. For buyers who want the horse country without the farm chores, The Cliffs at Glassy sits on Glassy Mountain above Landrum, with barns nearby for boarding.

Families should know that Landrum High School earned an Excellent rating on the South Carolina report card for 2024 to 2025, its second straight year.

Available here now: Thanksgiving Farm, $4,995,000.
